Saturday 12 August 2006 - Territory Craft, Darwin

In association with the Selling Yarns conference, workshops and a showcase day will take place on the lawns at Territory Craft on Saturday 12 August, showcasing Australian Indigenous textile practices.

Please note: The Workshops and Showcase are pre-conference events (separate). Bookings are essential and you'll need to register through Territory Craft.

Morning Sessions: 10.00am - 1.00pm
Workshop 1 -   Possum skin cloaks   with Vicki Couzens and Treahna Hamm

Workshop 2 -   Jewellery - Shell and seed threading with Mavis Gananbarr, Rose Mamuniny and Alice Whish
Workshop 3 -   Spinning a Yarn Pitjantjatjara Way with Pantjiti McKenzie from Ernabella
Afternoon Sessions: 1.00pm - 4.00pm
Workshop 4 -   Cloth figure and dollmaking with Nalda Searles & Jean Riley
Workshop 5 -   Pandanus coil weaving with Clara and Marley from Bula'bula Aboriginal Arts Corporation at Ramingining
Workshop 6 -   Tjanpi basketry lead by Kantjupayi Benson and friends from Blackstone Community - makers of the prize winning Toyota

Workshops are limited to 10 participants each, so be early to register.

The showcase is an oppotunity for Indigenous craftspeople to promote their work. The event forms part of the traditional 'gallery trail' on the Saturday following the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards, where people involved in Indigenous arts and crafts; curators, collectors, artists, students, researchers and academics and business representatives, as well as the general public will be able to buy, participate in and generally gain a better understanding on the variety and skill involved in Indigenous textile production.
