Associate Director, Object Gallery
Brian Parkes has been Associate Director and Senior Curator at Object: Australian Centre for Craft and Design since January 2000. He has curated numerous exhibitions for Object including major survey shows of work by Akira Isogawa and Dinosaur Designs as well as important group exhibitions such as Sydney Style, featuring 12 Sydney-based designers at the Sydney Opera House, Global Local, which toured to the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the landmark survey of contemporary Australian design Freestyle: New Australian Design for Living, which toured to Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Milan.
As a writer and editor, Parkes has contributed to a significant number of books, catalogues and magazines. He was one of ten curators invited to contribute to &Fork, a major book published by Phaidon Press, London in 2007 profiling 100 emerging designers from around the world. Since January 2008 Parkes has been an Adjunct Curator for the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and is a member of the City of Sydney’s Public Art Advisory Panel.
Parkes is currently working with Object’s Assistant Curator Nicole Foreshew on developing a major exhibition of Indigenous sculpture to be co-presented by Object and the Australian Museum in 2009.
