Margie West: Biography

Curatorial consultant and Emeritus Curator of Aboriginal Art, Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory

Margie West holds a Post Graduate Degree in Anthropology from The Australian National University and has 30 years experience in museum curation. West held the position Curator of Aboriginal Art and Material Culture at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) in Darwin from 1978-2005. She has recently been appointed Emeritus Curator of Aboriginal Art at MAGNT.

West has been involved in a range of programs including heritage maintenance and museum development for Aboriginal communities. She has curated many international and national touring Aboriginal art exhibitions, including The Inspired Dream; Rainbow Sugarbag and Moon; Kuruwarri; Hermannsburg Potters; Hot Wax: an exhibition of Australian, Aboriginal and Indonesian Batik and Transitions: 17 Years of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award.

Margie West is the founder of the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award and has published extensively on Aboriginal art, including contemporary developments in Indigenous fibre art. Margie West now works as a curatorial consultant.
