Gallery Assistant, Kaltjiti Arts
Marita Emily Baker, a Pitjantjatjara woman, was born in Fregon in 1968. She went to the local Fregon Anangu School and also spent some time in Adelaide attending Inglefarm High School while living at the Wiltja Hostel.
Baker is versatile having worked in numerous positions within the Kaltjiti Community at Fregon - Kaltjiti Office, Kaltjiti Store and Kaltjiti Arts and Crafts included during the early 1990's. In these early days she worked in the mediums of painting, silk painting and lino cuts. Always evident was a natural, artistic talent showing innovation and as excellent sense of colour and design. Some themes from her work include Mai Putitja, Bush Tucker and Kanpi ngura, stories from Kanpi Country.
From 1996-2005 Marita moved to Kanpi, her fathers traditional country, and for some of this time was Chairperson of the Community. On returning to the Kaltjiti Arts centre Baker is now the Gallery Assistant for Kaltjiti Arts. She has also resumed painting exhibiting, most recently, at the Adelaide Festival Centre during the Anangu Backyard Exhibition. Her most recent work in 2006 wos the Peter Baillie Award Exhibition.
