Arts Director, Maningrida Arts and Culture
Apolline Kohen is currently Arts Director at Maningrida Arts and Culture, and is responsible for its exhibition program and daily operations of the arts centre.
After completing her studies in Art History and Museum Management at the Ecole du Louvre (Paris, France), she has worked at the National Museum of Australia (Canberra) and then on various projects including a documentary film dealing with Kuninjku art for ARTE (Franco-German TV station) in early 2003.
Kohen has initiated two major international projects for Maningrida Arts and Culture: the exhibition In the heart of Arnhem Land: Myth and the making of Aboriginal art, Musee de l'Hotel-Dieu, Mantes-La-Jolie, France (June-October 2001) and the cultural exchange Crossings between indigenous artists from Maningrida and French artists (2001 and 2003) which resulted in the presentation of a mixed media performance at the 2003 Darwin festival.
More recently, Kohen has worked on the exhibitions Crossing Country: the alchemy of Western Arnhem Land presented at the AGNSW from September to December 2004 and John Mawurndjul Journey through time in Northern Australia presented at the Musee Jean Tinguely in Basel, Switzerland from September 2005 to January 2006. She puts together an average of 25 commercial exhibitions per year for Maningrida Arts and Culture. She is currently curating with Jon Altman the exhibition Mumeka to Milmilngkan: innovation in Kurulk bark painting which will open at the Drill Hall Gallery (Canberra) in November 2006.
