Session: Engaging communities 11:20 - 12:30 pm, Sunday, 13 August 2006

Liz Scott

Coordinator, The Alice Springs Beanie Festival

Abstract

In July 2006 the Alice Springs Beanie Festival turned 10. It has been an exciting and unexpected 10 years of beanie festivals, and each year the festival has grown and expanded from one small beanie party to a 4 day extravaganza celebrating with over 35,000 beanies. Amongst our many aims, the main aim of the festival is to involve and encourage the Indigenous women of Central Australia in the opportunity to create their own beanies and participate in the growing beanie arts industry.

The Alice Springs Beanie Festival presentation will talk about the journey of the beanie festival to date paying special attention to the involvement of the Indigenous women and the contributions they have made to our successful and well loved festival.
